The Golden Egg Award

Previously the Quarto Translations/Golden Egg Academy Diversity Award

At Golden Egg we pride ourselves on our ethical approach to business and to publishing.
Our aim always is to encourage diversity in books and publishing in general.

The Golden Egg Academy Award, with its offer of a writer development course and a First Look deal with Chicken House, is a prime example of an opportunity that gives aspiring writers of colour of children’s fiction a supported path to publication.

About the Award

We are delighted to relaunch The Golden Egg Award open to writers from backgrounds under-represented in children’s publishing. We are keen to hear from unagented, unpublished children’s fiction writers in the UK, who may identify as Black, Asian or from a minority ethnic group, LGBTQ+, disabled or other groups not traditionally represented in the industry.

We are offering two places on our popular Write Your Successful Children’s Novel course from April 2022.

Applications open on the 1st January 2022.

To apply, please fill out the application form by clicking on the blue button below. Once you’ve submitted your form, you will be prompted to send the following to [email protected] with the subject line THE GOLDEN EGG AWARD:

  • The opening one (1) thousand words of your novel.
  • A short synopsis of your novel or a paragraph with the overarching goal of your main character (max. 250 words).

Diversity Statement

Diversity includes, according to Inclusive Minds, race and heritage, disability, gender and gender identity, sexual orientation, age, socio-economic status, religion, and culture. The applicant could identify themselves as being from one or more under-represented diverse groups.

Our Ethos

At Golden Egg we pride ourselves on our ethical approach to business and to publishing. Our aim always is to encourage diversity in books and publishing in general. Therefore, this award is aimed at encouraging diverse writers and diverse stories as well as providing opportunities for writers who would not normally be able to benefit from the expertise at the Golden Egg Academy.

At Golden Egg we are defining diversity according to the Inclusive Minds definition, which includes race and heritage, disability, gender and gender identity, sexual orientation, age, socio-economic status, religion and culture. The award is for writers of talent. The ultimate aim is to enable children to see themselves in the literature they are reading and meet published writers that they might wish to emulate.
